A whole era of basketball was defined by a number of legends who played in the NBA. Michael Jordan, however, will always be the best. During his tenure, he had an unmatched impact on the league and rose to prominence as one of sports’ most important people.
In the NBA, he also had one of the most successful careers ever. But in a startling turn of events, he unexpectedly bought the Charlotte Hornets years after his retirement. In 2010, MJ made news when he invested astronomically in the Charlotte Hornets. Jordan managed the team for 13 years, although he never applied his playing success to his owning tenure.
His Airness is now leaving the brand after realizing a staggering $3 billion profit on his initial investment. The Hornets are now faced with a great lot of uncertainty as a result of this decision, though. The recent severe disrespect they received from several billion-dollar companies only served to fuel the fire.
A significant cut is being made to Michael Jordan’s old club
More clever than he could have anticipated, Michael Jordan’s decision to buy the Charlotte Hornets turned out to be. Jordan achieved an incredible $3B profit from his initial $275M investment when he sold his shares of the team, despite the team’s run of disappointing performances. But nothing from this agreement benefited the Hornets.
It is clear from the Hornets’ recent performance that they do not rank among the NBA’s most prosperous teams. Unfortunately, ESPN, TNT, and ABC felt that this was sufficient enough to forbid them from having games nationally televised.
In the 2022–23 season, there were only 2 Hornets games that were nationally televised. This season, there has only been one game left. The Hornets have taken a significant hit in this area, while teams like the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers regularly play more than 25 of these types of games.
The Hornets had to put up with this extreme disdain from the media titans. This does not necessarily sum up their forthcoming season, though.
The future is bright for the Hornets
After a disappointing season the previous year, the Charlotte Hornets found success this year. With the second overall pick of the 2023 NBA Draught, they selected Brandon Miller, a graduate of Alabama State. Going into the new season, the franchise has a lot to look forward to.
For the Hornets, the 2022–23 season was marred by controversy and injuries. Miles Bridges, their top forward, was expelled from the squad for the whole season after being accused of domestic violence. LaMelo Ball, their All-Star guard, actually missed the majority of the season due to a serious ankle injury.
However, they are both expected to return this season in better shape than ever.
