Unexpectedly, Josh Allen, the starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, was chosen by his peers as the “Most Overrated Quarterback.” Additionally, the staff at ESPN’s “Get Up” struggled to comprehend it.
Louis Riddick, a former NFL player and commentator, was especially taken aback by Allen’s ranking as the top “Most Overrated Quarterback.” He made the observation that Allen’s ability to win games with his strong arm is acknowledged even by the Kansas City Chiefs, one of the best teams in the league:
“I’m shocked. The Kansas City Chiefs said that ‘when we play Josh Allen, we know that with one swing of that arm, he can win a football game.’ And he almost did it against them(Chiefs) this past year if Stephon Diggs had made that catch…The only other quarterback that can make that throw is their quarterback (Mahomes).”
The deep ball from Allen to Stefon Diggs during the 2023 AFC game versus the Chiefs that had everyone in stitches was the throw Riddick was referring to.
Josh Allen : Underrated or Overrated ?
Diggs was unable to catch a spectacular deep ball that Allen threw at a crucial juncture. Thrown from Allen’s own 12-yard line, the pass covered around 60 yards before landing precisely where Diggs needed to at the Chiefs’ 28-yard line.
Riddick continued by saying that quarterbacks who possess the ability to run as well as pass are the ones that opposing defenses are most afraid of. He compared it to his playing days, remembering a matchup with Major Harris of West Virginia, a player who could get past defenders in a variety of ways.
One of the NFL’s top dual-threat quarterbacks, Allen is well acknowledged. In five of his first six seasons, he has carried for more than 500 yards, and just last year, he scored 15 rushing touchdowns. Under Allen’s leadership, the Bills have been to the postseason five times, and he has an interception percentage of just 2.5 percent, which is even lower than that of players like Payton Manning and Joe Montana.
But he also has the unwelcome record for the most turnovers since 2008 with 102. One NFC West player voted for Allen, saying, “Too many turnovers.” Allen is regarded as “overrated” by other NFL players. Do head coaches and senior management, however, have the same view?
