Alabama junior guard Aden Holloway was arrested Monday on charges of first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp after authorities recovered more than a pound of the drug during a search of a residence near the university campus.
The 21-year-old Holloway, the Crimson Tide’s second-leading scorer with 16.8 points per game, was taken into custody by agents from the West Alabama Narcotics Task Force. The search also uncovered drug paraphernalia and cash, according to multiple reports.
First-degree possession of marijuana is classified as a Class C felony in Alabama, carrying a potential penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $15,000. Holloway’s bond was set at $5,000, though it remains unclear if he has been released from Tuscaloosa County Jail.
The arrest comes just four days before No. 4-seeded Alabama is scheduled to face Hofstra in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Tampa, Florida. Holloway, who transferred to Alabama from Auburn ahead of the 2024-25 season, recently earned All-SEC Third Team honors on March 9. He has been a key contributor to the team’s No. 3-ranked offense nationally, shooting 44% from 3-point range.
A spokesperson for the Alabama men’s basketball team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Last week, Holloway was involved in a separate traffic stop with University of Alabama police, though details of that incident were not disclosed.
News of the arrest quickly spread on social media, with fans expressing shock and disappointment. One user posted, “just insane just dumb ughhhh,” while another quipped about the timing ahead of the tournament matchup.
