According to Eric Bieniemy, He Declined to Remain With the Commanders

Eric Bieniemy has accepted a position as an assistant coach at the collegiate level following 16 seasons as an NFL assistant coach.

Bieniemy put some of his ideas down in an email to ESPN.com after deciding to take the job at UCLA as offensive coordinator and associate head coach. He claims he might have stayed with the Commanders among other things. Bieniemy wrote on ESPN.com :

I have no regrets with the Commanders,” .“Contrary to what some think and what has been put out in the media, I was not fired. I actually just chose not to stay. Learned a lot and that is always a good thing.”

Bieniemy’s journey in NFL so far

It’s unknown if he was given a role as offensive coordinator or something else on Dan Quinn’s staff. Rather, Bieniemy goes back to the university where he was an assistant coach from 2003 to 2005.

After that, he worked as an offensive coordinator for two seasons with the Colorado Buffaloes, as a running backs coach for five seasons with the Chiefs, as an offensive coordinator for five more seasons with the Chiefs, and as an offensive coordinator for one season in Washington.

Bieniemy was considered for head coach positions multiple times, but he was never given an opportunity to lead an NFL team. Bieniemy wrote : “I have had countless conversations and interviews with many teams, and I have been applauded and lauded,” “I can’t say why certain decisions were or were not made but it had nothing to [do] with a lack of anything on my end.”

Going forward, Bieniemy’s task will be to figure out how to maintain his relevance in terms of prospective NFL positions. Whether he intends to accomplish that in 2025 or later.
