Lamar Jackson led the Baltimore Ravens to the best AFC record in 2019 and was named the NFL regular season MVP. Patrick Mahomes won both the Super Bowl and Super Bowl MVP in the same year.
Jackson won the NFL regular season MVP award once more last season. Once more, he guided the Ravens to the top record in the AFC. However, he was unable to lead Baltimore to the Super Bowl. He lost the conference title game to Mahomes‘ Kansas City Chiefs 17–10 at home. Mahomes earned both the Super Bowl MVP award and the championship two weeks later.
Jackson is currently the front-runner to win the league MVP award for a third consecutive year, over halfway through the 2024 season. However, Mahomes has led the Chiefs to an undefeated start, which included a Week 1 victory over Jackson’s Ravens. Jackson is ready to put a stop to Kansas City’s hopes of winning three straight titles, even with that loss.
“Wow, the MVP favorite has been the league’s best player. Great analysis!”
Indeed, the aforementioned remark is clear. However, Mahomes trails only Jackson in the MVP race after a dismal statistical start to the season. Mahomes has eight interceptions compared to Josh Allen’s zero, and he has half as many touchdown passes (6) as Allen (12). He is, however, a little stronger pick (+475) to push Allen (+500) out for the prize, according to DraftKings.
How good has Lamar Jackson become ?
In 2024, Jackson, on the other hand, has excelled. He still poses a powerful threat with his legs, ranking first among quarterbacks and eleventh overall in rush yards (455), but as a passer, he has reached new heights: With a passer rating of 118.0, Jackson leads the NFL. Lamar Jackson trails only Baker Mayfield (1,859) in throwing yards (1,810). In terms of pass yards per attempt (9.1), Jackson is ranked second. The smallest of margins separates him from league leader Jared Goff (9.2). Only Mayfield (18) has more passing touchdowns than Jackson, who is tied for second place with Jordan Love (15).
Additionally, Jackson has only thrown two interceptions, which is third-fewest in the league. The worst part is that both of Jackson’s interceptions, according to ESPN Stats & Information, occurred on drops. Deshaun Watson is tied for the most drops in the NFL with those two giveaways. Like Allen, Jackson would have a goose egg in the interception column if his intended receiver had hauled in those passes.
